What To Do In An Emergency

There are a number of steps that you should take in the case of a dental emergency, and we offer the main ones as a checklist below:

• If there is any risk of a head injury, such as in the case of a fall or car accident, please visit your local A&E first of all to ensure that there is no serious head trauma that may require urgent attention.
• Providing that the above is not the case, or you have been given the all-clear, your next step should be to call our Ipswich dental practice straight away. In the case of emergencies such as a very painful toothache, it is best to call us as early in the day as possible, as this increases the chances of you receiving same-day treatment.
• Take your usual painkiller if the pain is significant. This will make the waiting period less stressful and may also help to reduce any swelling that has occurred. A cold compress may also help.
• If we are unable to see you on the same day; for example, if you call us very late on, you will still need to keep the tooth and surrounding gums clean. As you may not be able to brush the tooth, due to the pain, a warm saltwater solution gently tipped around the area will help to keep it clean until such time as you can be treated.
• Make sure you keep emergency dental appointments that you make. Occasionally, pain may subside to the point where you feel you don’t actually need the appointment, but even if this does happen, it is essential that you still have the tooth checked. If you have been in significant pain, it is almost certain that some damage will have occurred that will need treating. In addition to this, there is every chance that the pain may flare up again, leaving you in some discomfort that could last.
