Oral surgery deals with the diagnosis and surgical treatment of different diseases and injuries to achieve better dental health.

Our team assists in complex cases such as surgical root canal treatment, trauma, difficult tooth removal, broken down teeth, wisdom tooth extraction, soft tissue lesions and dental implants.

Referral to a Specialist Oral Surgeon is mainly for surgical difficulties that would require extra precision and skill.

• Difficult tooth extraction.
• Biopsy and other surgical procedures on soft tissue.
• Bone augmentation.
• Extraction of broken teeth roots that are still retained in the jawbone.
• Some wisdom teeth extractions.

Removal of impacted wisdom teeth

The wisdom teeth (or third molars) are usually the last teeth to erupt into the mouth and can come through at any time after about 16 years of age. Often there is not enough room to accommodate wisdom teeth, so they do not come into the mouth normally. When this happens, the wisdom teeth are said to be impacted.

An impacted wisdom tooth can cause a few problems that mean the tooth is best removed. Most commonly, these are:

• Repeated attacks of infection in the gum surrounding the tooth, and this leads to pain and swelling.
• Food packing into the space between the wisdom tooth and the tooth in front, which causes decay in one or both teeth.
• Cysts form around the wisdom tooth if it does not come into the mouth properly. A cyst occurs when fluid fills the sac that normally surrounds a developing wisdom tooth.

If you have a patient that you feel would benefit from a specialist opinion or treatment for an oral surgery procedure, our team would be more than happy to accept your referral and treat your patient accordingly before discharging them back to your care on completion.
